The Luminous Lagoon is renowned for its bioluminescent waters, a rare natural phenomenon that occurs in only a few places around the world. The lagoon is home to millions of tiny microorganisms called dinoflagellates. Located in Falmouth, where the Martha Brae River meets the Caribbean Sea, the lagoon’s brackish water provides the perfect environment for these microorganisms to thrive. When disturbed at night, the lagoon lights up with a stunning, neon-like blue glow, creating an enchanting light show. The visibility of the bioluminescence is dependent on the time of year and weather conditions, but it’s most vibrant on dark, moonless nights.

The tour includes a boat ride during which guides explain the science behind the glowing waters and provide insight into the history and ecology of the area. One of the highlights of the tour is the opportunity to swim in the glowing waters. As you move through the lagoon, your body will be surrounded by a shimmering blue light, making for an unforgettable and almost otherworldly experience.

End the night with a fire and limbo dance. This dance originated on the slave ships as a form of exercise. It continues to be celebrated in Caribbean Carnivals and Calypso as a symbol of survival.
